| Mechanism (summary) | Human chorionic gonadotropin is a placental polypeptide hormone composed of α and β subunits. In the reviewed U.S. label, urinary-derived hCG products are FDA-approved for prepubertal cryptorchidism not due to anatomical obstruction, selected cases of male hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, and induction of ovulation and pregnancy in appropriately pretreated infertile women. The label explicitly states that hCG is not effective adjunctive therapy for obesity. |
| Dosing notes | Administration is intramuscular only in the representative U.S. label. Example regimens include 4,000 USP units three times weekly for three weeks or 5,000 USP units every second day for four injections in cryptorchidism; 500–1,000 USP units multiple times weekly or 4,000 USP units three times weekly for months in male hypogonadotropic hypogonadism; and 5,000–10,000 USP units one day after the last menotropin dose for ovulation induction. |
| Storage | Before reconstitution, the reviewed product is stored at 20-25°C. After reconstitution, it may be refrigerated at 2-8°C and must be discarded after 60 days. Refrigerate after reconstitution; do not freeze and do not shake. |
